Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr, has recently made some major changes to the American food pyramid, as well as to vaccine regulations. In a press conference on Jan. 7, RFK announced the new food pyramid and what changes it had made. The pyramid was somewhat inverted, as it now says to prioritize protein, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. The main thing that RFK said he wanted us to include in our diets more is red meat to increase protein intake. Another point he stated was that he wants to end the war against saturated fats, and claimed there to be no scientific evidence saying that saturated fats cause health complications.
However, many medical professionals argued against this claim by saying that there is tons of evidence and backed up research revealing how consuming too much saturated fat can lead to heart disease, and other cardiovascular issues. Another major change that the new pyramid has made is de-prioritizing the need for whole grains and instead emphasizing protein as a higher priority. He claims that we need to be eating more “real foods”, or more nutrient-packed and less processed foods. In summary, at the top of the pyramid lie meats, dairy, fruits, and vegetables, while whole grains lie at the bottom. RFK’s main points were to consume more protein through red meat, eat less processed food, and include more healthy fats in your diet.
While many health officials were against his claims about consuming more saturated fats, they did point out that his push for more people to consume fruits and vegetables is a good change, and the reduction of processed food in our diets would greatly benefit us. As of now, the pyramid is controversial, as it contains both valid and questionable dietary advice.
Another major change RFK brought in early January was some adjustments to the child vaccination schedule. He announced that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) would be updating its vaccination schedule for children. Now, the number of diseases prevented by vaccines for children has been reduced from 17 to 11. Even though the states, not the federal government, have the authority to control vaccinations, recommendations from the CDC greatly affect a state’s regulations. The vaccines that were removed from the schedule are influenza, rotavirus, meningococcal, hepatitis A & B, COVID-19, Dengue, and respiratory syncytial virus. Although parents can still give their children these vaccines, it has become significantly more challenging to do so.
After the announcement, many public health officials were outraged by the sudden changes and how they lacked any real scientific evidence supporting the removal of those vaccines. According to a physician and immunologist, Dr. Helen Chu, “The abrupt change to the entire U.S. childhood vaccine schedule is alarming, unnecessary, and will endanger the health of children in the United States”. The CDC said these changes would help raise immunization rates, which many other health officials have said is untrue, and the opposite will happen.
Over the past few years, public trust in vaccines has declined, leading to more and more people deciding not to become vaccinated. This has inevitably led to the resurgence of diseases that were very near to being eradicated, such as measles, pertussis, and whooping cough. According to The New York Times, “In 2025, the United States recorded more cases of measles than it had in any year since 1993. Later this month, the country may lose its official measles elimination status, which it has held since 2000”. And now doctors and physicians fear that the number of unvaccinated people will continue to rise, especially due to the federal government’s actions and claims about vaccines. Now, with these most recent vaccination changes, doctors say that the number of children who will be at great risk of catching severe disease will increase.
