Senior Syd Springberg wraps on Shorecrest’s Chris Seyfried.

The Hawks wrestling team won a competitive match against the Shorecrest Scots, 39-23, Thursday night in the Terraceum.

Approaching the last matchup, the Hawks took the first lead over the Scots 24-23 after Shawn Poole’s major decision win. Syd Springberg, No. 8 state ranked in 170 pound weight class, won the first pin of the night to pull the Hawks ahead 30-23.

“Good wrestling on both sides, Shorecrest is definitely a better team than they were last year,” Springberg said.

Springberg’s match led to another pin by 182 pound David Marrs, pinning his opponent in a flashing nine seconds.

“I get to work with [some of the] best wrestlers in state. It’s helping me with my takedowns and pins, that’s good”, Marrs said.

In other key matchups, Brett Potter faced Robert Ortega, Shorecrest’s 220 pound competitor ranked No. 7 in the state at his weight class. Potter was close to getting the pin, but finished the night winning with a major decision.

“I thought it was a pin, it is what it is,” Potter said. “A win is a win, I still won, not making any excuses.”

However, Potter is ranked No. 8 in the 195 pound weight class.

“Strategy… [Ortega]’s really strong, awkwardly strong and he got me in a vice grip and I didn’t want to be in that,” Potter said.
