Insomniac Games revealed their next game in the works, Marvel’s Wolverine, on Sept. 9, 2021. The 50 second trailer showcased Logan sitting at a bar, surrounded by bodies. A man gets up off the floor, whips out a knife, and starts walking up behind Logan. The trailer ends with Wolverine unsheathing his signature claws from his wrist, to prepare to face the armed man. The trailer was brief, but still conveyed all it needed to. Fans of the company and character were incredibly excited about the game and eagerly awaited another update. And then a year passed. And then another. And another. It had been four years of radio silence from Insomniac Games about Marvel’s Wolverine. The most info received about it was from the Insomniac data breach in late 2023, when the ransomware group Rhysida obtained and threatened to leak more than 1.5 terabytes of files from the game company. When Insomniac refused to pay their ransom price of $2 million, the group released all the files to the public. Some of the things that were leaked from this hack were upcoming projects, how much profit past games made, and even early storyboards for Wolverine, as well as plot ideas. But the leak was the only info we had gotten about the game in four years. Many people speculated and feared that the game had been scrapped due to the leaks.
But then, finally, in September of 2025, at the 2025 PlayStation State of Play, we got news about Marvel’s Wolverine. And it was big news. During the event, Insomniac revealed a two minute gameplay trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, which was jam-packed with gameplay mechanics, cinematics, and Easter eggs. The main thing the trailer showcased besides gameplay was how gory and violent this game will be. And this is exactly what fans of the character wanted, as it represents Logan in the comics and his brutal nature. In the trailer, Wolverine is shown in places all across the globe, from the wilderness in Canada to the fictional island of Madripoor, all the way to the alleyways of Japan. The game revolves around Logan having holes in his memories about his own life, so he sets off on a mission to fill those holes with answers. On his travels, he encounters many individuals who mean him harm, so Wolverine is forced to do what he does best. And what he does isn’t very nice. The trailer shows many characters from the X-Men franchise, including Omega Red, Mystique, a Sentinel, and the Reavers. The trailer ends with a release date of Fall 2026. The game will be a PS5 exclusive.
Most people were incredibly hyped for the game for its riveting gameplay, extraordinary graphics, and its interesting story. However, one worry that people had was how Insomniac could make the game difficult when one of Wolverine’s powers is that he is constantly healing on his own. Insomniac said that they considered this and implemented a system into the game where you can only passively heal when achieving certain combos in combat. In other words, the more damage you do, the quicker you heal. Marvel’s Wolverine is set to release in the fall of 2026, and there are, without a doubt, more trailers to come. Who knows what else will be revealed for the game next?
