Hello I’m one of the new editors-in-chief of the Hawkeye, Soren Ramerman. This is going to be my third year in the program and my fifth year writing and editing for journalism programs. High school has been a journey to this point through years and years of hard work sitting in the back of journalism working on sports articles and music reviews. Going from sports game to sports game journalism has truly been a journey so far making countless friends and making memories every week. Getting into journalism was an easy process for me. My whole life I have been obsessed with basketball and football knowing the most obscure stats on each sport. My obsession with basketball is what drew me towards writing in journalism, ever since I was a kid I have always wanted to write about obscure basketball players and stats so I always try to incorporate that into my articles, shout out the legendary role players Quinn Cook and Ben Bentil for making me obsessed with random players. Music has always been a second passion of mine, when I was a kid I was the biggest Freddie Mercury fan listening to Queen every night to go to bed. When I got older I ventured into rap artists with Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer prize winning album Damn being my biggest focus of all, to today finally venturing out of rap into country listening to Kashus Cullpepper and Morgan Wallen religiously. A huge new idea I will be bringing to the paper next year is articles about intriguing Star Wars facts like how Fives was the most instrumental character in the Clone Wars to how Darth Maul was actually the biggest anti-hero in media history. I also want to bring the school in as I will be sending out letters to the students on what they are intrigued in and what the paper needs to write about to address what YOU find is the most important thing you cover. Outside of journalism my life has been a busy journey so far. From protesting with my church for the rights of my fellow citizens, to running miles and miles every week to stay in peak shape for track season. I also love going to concerts like when I went to Cigarettes after Sex and cried my eyes out this past fall or when I went to a Laufey concert and realized I need to not just listen to rap music. As the new editor and chief it is my goal to make this newspaper as big as I can and to connect it to every single soul in this school one way or another. This is everyone’s right to get accurate and interesting articles and it will always be honest and unbiased for every student. I want to also present the opinions of me and all my peers to connect just a little part of this extremely divided country. I appreciate this opportunity and shout out to the massive amounts of caffeine I’m going to be living off of for the next five years of schooling! Η
Hi! I’m the other new editor-in-chief of the Hawkeye, Madeline Simkowiak. It’s been a real doozy getting this paper done, my and Soren’s first paper as editors-in-chief. I’m currently finishing my second year in Hawkeye, and third in student journalism. As the previous Op-Ed editor, it’s a bit of a change focusing on so much news, but I’m committed to providing fast and accurate information to our community. While most of my time is committed to journalism, I make sure to save some for my hobbies, which mostly consist of board games and guitar. This was the first (and last) year of Root Club, where we played and admired Leder Games’ asymmetrical strategy board game “Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right.” While the club had to dissolve due to changes in member’s schedules, it was a great experience and I loved getting to be a part of the community. I would like to give a huge thanks to all of its members, and especially to Ms. Weber, who advised the club. As much as I love Root and Leder Games’ other games, I think my favorite game from Leder Games is “Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile.” Oath has a few key differences to Root, one of the main ones being its symmetry. In Root, every player has its own unique faction with different pieces, moves and even win conditions. In Oath, while one player is the Chancellor and has a unique relic and win condition, every other player starts as an exile or citizen and has the same options for win conditions. Both are viable options, but the exiles and citizens give you a blank canvas to build on based on how the game flows, where there aren’t really ways to alter the optimal way to play your faction in Root. In terms of my guitar practice, I’m still very new and only started playing in Darin Faul’s guitar class, but it’s shown to be really fun so far. I’ve always found the school’s Performing Arts Showcase as a really interesting concept, and since I’ve learned more about music and guitar they’ve only become more enjoyable. There’s still one left in the school year, on June 12, and I would highly recommend going and seeing all the different musicians.
