A new addition to the ever expanding universe of “Gundam” is just on the horizon, “Gundam GQuuuuuuX.” While that’s an intimidating name, it is pronounced something close to “Gundam G-Qucks.” Starting Feb. 28, the movie “Gundam GQuuuuuuX Beginning” released in American theatres with English subtitles. “Gundam GQuuuuuuX Beginning” was not the whole story however, rather the introduction and setup for the “Gundam GQuuuuuuX” anime series releasing April 8 on Amazon Prime Video.
The original “Mobile Suit Gundam” originally started in 1979, but since then it has formed many different spin off series. The “Gundam GQuuuuuuX” story is a fun twist on the original plot, starting very similar to the original series but then introducing a new set of main protagonists on one of the post-war space colonies.
While the beginning of the film has much more context and humor if you have watched the original series from ’79, you will still be able to enjoy the movie without watching them. That being said, if you haven’t already watched the original series, but still want to have some background so you can fully enjoy the film and upcoming series, there are three movies on Netflix which are condensed recaps of the original series.
