Four Terrace wrestlers compete at WSWA state

The Washington State Wrestling Association freestyle state championships were held at Jackson H.S. on May 14.

The event featured many of the top wrestling clubs in the state including the Edmonds Wrestling Rhinos, which had four MTHS students compete.

Sophomores Trung Banh, Ashley Rucker and Marqueta Johnson, and junior Adaon Castleton were the wrestlers who competed in the tournament. All four wrestled for the MTHS wrestling team during the winter season but have continued to wrestle since then for the Rhinos, a club based in Edmonds that draws local wrestlers of all ages.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class qualified for the national competition, which will be held in Fargo, North Dakota during the summer.

Banh finished in third place, while Rucker and Johnson both took second place to qualify for freestyle nationals. However, Castleton was on his way to qualifying before he suffered a shoulder injury and was forced to forfeit his match.

“It hasn’t quite sunken in yet. It’s going to be hard to raise the money to go to North Dakota though,” Banh said.

Banh said he will probably have to “get a job or find sponsors” in order to raise funds to wrestle at nationals.

Either way, the four wrestlers have shown that wrestling is a year-round sport and that they’ll return next year with more experience.

“I think [the national championships] will give me more mat experience,” Banh said.

“I get to wrestle the best in the nation so that will help get me better as a wrestler.”
