MTHS Cheer does well, maintains in top 50

On Monday, January 18th, the MTHS cheer team placed second at Bellevue High School in their fourth competition of the year. The team scored a 56.25 out of 90.

“That’s one of our best performances [we’ve had] where everything hit.” senior co-captain Rikki Kuhn said.

The team hopes to remain in the top 50, which qualifies them for state as well as score at least 59 points–another way to qualify so that they feel that they earned their spot in state.

Although MTHS students are used to seeing the cheer team perform in assemblies, competition routines include less dancing and more stunts.

In these competitions, the team must perform a cheer as part of their routine. Through the intensity of the season, the team’s sense of humor has created a positive environment for them to thrive in

“If things don’t really work we just kind of make a joke about it and it somehow works for us.” senior co-captain Taylor Rash said.

In preparation for Saturday’s competition, the team has received outside help from other coaches to perfect their routine.

“We’re trying to improve how sharp we are with things, especially the cheer. Just being more clean, sharp, and loud.” Rash said.

The team’s next competition is Saturday, January 23rd, at Kentwood High school.
