Hawks finish season strong, defeat Chargers 2-1

The Hawks played the Marysville-Getchell Chargers at Edmonds Stadium in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday night. The Hawks added one more to the win column with a score of 2-1 making their overall record 8-6-2.

It was a slow start for both teams until the chargers scored first with 10:30 left in the first half. Neither team scored for the rest of the half leaving a score of 0-1 at halftime.

Although being down early in the game the Hawks scored just ten minutes into the first half tying the game at 1-1. This jolted the Hawks and they played with an energy they didn’t have in the first half. Eight minutes after the Hawks scored their first goal forward Lily hart made booming shot with 22:00 left in the game.

“It felt really good because it was senior night,” Lily Hart said. “We wanted to go out with a bang, it was our last game on this field and it was nice to get the win.”

The seniors played their hearts out and didn’t leave anything behind for their last regular season game in their high school careers.

“It felt great to win on senior night, the seniors played well as they always do,” head coach Evan Hatch said. “Ironically I was even more impressed with the freshman. So I think that is fitting that the seniors are on their way out and the freshman really stepped up and took control of the game.”

With an overall record of 8-6-2 the Hawks will continue their season in the playoffs.

“It’s good to end on a win, as a team you want to be peaking when you get closer to the playoffs and we’re doing just that,” Hatch said. “I think we have all the momentum that we need and we’re just going to continue to work hard in practice and be prepared for the playoffs one game at a time and if we win a couple games in a row we’ll be in state.”

The playoffs are double elimination meaning if the Hawks lose twice, it will be the end to a hard fought season.

The Hawks take on the Ferndale Golden Eagles for the first game of the playoffs 5:00pm Saturday, November 1 at Civic Stadium.
