The fifth installment in the “Shrek” franchise just got its first teaser trailer, announcing that the original cast will be making a comeback, along with some new faces.
It also revealed that all the characters will get a more modern redesign. And let’s just say, the fanbase has been pretty divided about this.
It’s been almost 15 years since the last “Shrek” movie, and A lot has happened since then. But surprisingly, “Shrek” has never really died off.
Fans of the films have kept him from being forgotten, so obviously Dreamworks (the studio behind “Shrek”) has decided to make another movie about the green ogre.
Funny enough, “Shrek 5” was announced back in 2016, we just haven’t heard much about its production until recently. And back in July, we got a release date revealed for the film, but it got pushed back to Dec. 23 to make room for “Minions 3.”
And when fans got their first look at the teaser recently, a lot of people started freaking out.
For starters, the new animation style looks very cartoony and more appealing to children, with many people comparing it to illumination’s style.
Many fans don’t appreciate this new style as the original “Shrek” was purposely designed to look different from other animated movies to stand out. And now this new movie is doing the exact opposite by trying to look like most modern animated films. Also, the original gang has gone through a big redesign. “Shrek’s” eyes are closer together, and his head is more egg-shaped.
Donkey’s fur has been given much more detail and has been given a tuff of fur on his chin to symbolize aging.
Multiple people have gone on record harshly criticizing this new look and demanding Shrek be brought back to his original state.
Even the team behind the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie has agreed with this. With all the backlash, it would be very wise for Dreamworks to reconsider these changes and make the community happy again.
But I have a personal theory of mine. I believe that the people behind this teaser purposely did this to spread the word about the film, basically granting free marketing for the movie.
And soon enough, they will return Shrek to his original design. So basically Dreamworks has played us all.
As of right now, “Shrek 5” is set to release on Dec. 23, 2026. And whether or not these changes are undone, it will most likely make bank.
Whether or not you like these designs or believe my theory is all up to you, but hopefully Dreamworks makes the right (and financially responsible) choice by giving the fans what they want.
