The much anticipated play by the MTHS drama department, “Wait Until Dark” will premiere tomorrow, Thursday Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. and will continue through Saturday Nov. 21.

This is the first production of the year for the MTHS drama department and will feature some new cast members. The play falls along the lines of being quite serious and at times a little frightening.

“A lot of the plays I’ve seen in the fall [usually] have a little more comedy in them, and aren’t such heavy hearted plays,” senior Dani Smith said. Smith is playing the role of Gloria, an 11-year-old girl who lives in the house with the blind protagonist, Susy, and assists her along the way.

The plot of the play revolves around a doll filled with heroin that is given to a man, and then later to his blind wife Susy. Three thugs trying to get the heroin back from her are the antagonists of the story, and they end up struggling mightily to complete this task.

Many dark moments, both literally and figuratively, are sure to take place during the play. There are moments when the theater is almost pitch black and all you can use are your ears to determine what is happening and where the actors are on stage.

Besides the use of darkness, there are a few other unique aspects to this play. The fact that the main character is blind means some differences in acting have to be made, even beyond just not being able to look at other people.

“We developed this grid system which is where I can only walk in certain areas because that’s what she would probably do; it helps to figure out a map of the house when you’re blind,” junior Haley Wiseman said. Wiseman will be playing the role of Susy Hendrix.
