The Gordon McLaughlin Scholarship

Named in honor of the father of two Hawkeye alumni – Michael and Erika McLaughlin – this scholarship is available only to a graduating member of the organization. When it was first started, it was one of the few (and perhaps only) such scholarship in the country specifically dedicated to a graduating high school journalist. The McLaughlin family continues to fund this scholarship and over the years have helped dozens of students continue their studies at the college level. Gordon McLaughlin was a tireless advocate for the program who could frequently be found in the Hawkeye newsroom helping out in any way he could, whether that be building our trophy case or feeding kids on deadline, he was an incredible presence. Unfortunately, cancer took Gordon from us far too early and it is his honor that our program is proud to keep his memory alive and active.

Hawkeye Most Valuable Staff Member

The Hawkeye Most Valuable Staff Member Award also began in the 1960-1961 school year. This is the publication's most prestigious internal award. Only HSM staff members may vote. Staff members treat this seriously and it has become a strong tradition and a wonderful way to honor those who have truly served our organization well. NOTE: In the case of a close vote, it is the prerogative of the adviser to award multiple recipients.

Tempo “Clarion” Most Valuable Staff Member

The Tempo Most Valuable Staff Member Award began in the 1960-1961 school year.

CTE Leadership Award

Each year the Edmonds School District CTE program invites each of its departments to nominate students who have done exemplary work in their respective programs. This is an award that the adviser recommends to the CTE Advisory Committee who ultimately chooses the honorees. Student winners are acknowledged at a formal ceremony each spring.
