The Edmonds Community College (EdCC) Black Box Theater is hosting a free movie screening Wednesday at 6 p.m. The featured film, “Big Dream,” is a documentary following seven young women from around the world pursuing their goals in computer science.

Edmonds Community College has many programs that support STEM education and careers, including the Relationships in Science Education (RiSE) program, as well as the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program.

Many of these programs work hard to support people in the STEM pathway and careers.

MESA director Jacquelyn Braggin said that at EdCC, they want to build a strong STEM community with not only just the local community, but also “the greater community of the Puget Sound.”

The “Big Dream” movement supports people in the next generation to pursue careers in STEM and shows real computer science in action during the movie. Braggin said that the documentary depicts one woman from Africa who is trying to teach other women how to code, as well as a woman from the United States who is running a “hackathon” in order to teach women about computer science.

The greatest goal of the movie screening to give an example of girls overcoming obstacles and reaching their goals.

“We screened the movie and were really inspired by it, so we wanted to share it with the greater community in hopes of inspiring more women to pursue science,” Braggin said.

The screening, sponsored by the EdCC student chapter of Society for Women Engineers, will be followed by an “informal question-and-answer session” featuring three local women in STEM careers.

The speakers include a professional engineer and a faculty member of EdCC, as well as a University of Washington graduate in computer science.

Braggin said that attendees will find out about the passions and goals of the speakers in their STEM careers.

“Students should feel inspired and motivated to study STEM subjects,” Braggin said.
