The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is sponsoring a free Mother Daughter Glamour Day on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. in the MTHS Hub.
The event will feature a potluck lunch followed by free manicures and hair design, as well as the opportunity to select a free dress and shoes to take home. There will also be door prizes, guest speakers and various bonding activities.
Glamour day is being headed by PTSA president Ellen Pritchett, who has devoted her month to collecting dresses and planning out the event.
“It started where i just wanted to do something fun to help the girls. Then it kind of progressed into wow, if the mothers could come help their daughters pick out the dress… So this kind of gives them the opportunity to go shopping and share that experience,” Pritchett said.
Pritchett collected 500 dresses for the event from various places in the community, starting with people in her neighborhood and progressing to local thrift stores.
As she was conducting her search, people offered her different items to give away as door prizes, including cosmetic packages and spa day gift certificates.
Also, Pritchett talked with the director of Gene Juarez Academy and arranged to have 10-12 students come to the event to do nails and style hair.
“Through the whole process I have been just touched by how generous people have been,” Pritchett said. “Everyone has been just so kind and generous, and it just makes me realize that there are a lot of good people in this world still.”
Everything involved in glamour day will be free of charge for all who attend.
Last year, Pritchett donated around 40 dresses to student advocate Ashley Johnson for girls in need.
“[Johnson] said not that many people came and chose a dress because maybe they felt embarrassed about saying that they’re needy. So I said let’s make it big. Let’s try and make it not just for the needy, let’s make it for everyone and make it fun,” Pritchett said.
Pritchett doesn’t yet know whether or not she is going to make this an annual event and is waiting to see how successful it is this year.
After the event, Pritchett will donate the leftover dresses to Melinda Truax for her Take This Dress to Heart fashion show and dress sale on Apr. 19. Proceeds from this event will go to the Heart of Edmonds Schools and Community foundation in order to equip every Edmonds School District school with an automated external defibrillator (AED) and a proper emergency scan for Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
