The Meadowdale Mavericks knocked off the Mountlake Terrace Hawks 16-7 in a hard-fought Wesco 3A battle on Friday night.
In a closely contested game, the Mavericks (3-1, 2-0 Wesco 3A) were able to pull away with kicker Brian Marty’s three field goals of 30, 30 and 34 yards. The Mavs were also aided by their power running game led by Kyle Gage and Michael Dever. Dever had a 4-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter, putting the Mavericks up 7-0.
The Hawks (2-2, 1-2 Wesco 3A) were unable to move the ball down the field effectively on the offensive side of the ball, with the exception of their first drive of the second half.
Freshman running back Devante Downs capped off a 46-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, pumping up the Terrace crowd for the first time. Shortly following the score, senior Julian Snow forced a fumble, allowing the Hawks to gain momentum. However, the Hawks could not capitalize and that momentum was short-lived after a couple of penalties forced the Hawks to punt away.
“We were just shooting ourselves in the foot,” Snow said regarding the team’s miscues.
Meadowdale was able to put pressure on Hawks quarterback Hunter Rook throughout the night. Rook never got into a rhythm offensively and threw a season-high three interceptions.
The Hawks face the Sedro Woolley Cubs out of the Northwest Conference (2-2) next Friday at Sedro-Woolley High School (1235 Third St., Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284), 7:00 p.m.
Sedro-Woolley lost to Squalicum 49-41 on Friday night. The Cubs’ key players include running back Clayton Johnson, who has 10 rushing touchdowns through four games, and quarterback Joe Janicki, who had five total touchdowns against Squalicum.
Despite the loss against Meadowdale, the Hawks still feel confident about their chances this season.
“We’re going to come back hard [against] Sedro-Woolley,” Snow said.
Notes: Zack Karels missed last week’s game against Bishop Blanchet but was back in the lineup. Mitch Haldane added nine tackles and two assists. Jope Motokana had two sacks.
