The Hawks faced their first loss of the season, falling 78-39 to the Shorecrest Scots at home on Dec. 13. The Hawks seemingly could never get into a rhythm, allowing Shorecrest to go on several large runs throughout the game. One of the few bright spots for the Hawks was freshman Jaliyah Dyson, who led all scorers for Terrace with 20 points, outscoring the rest of the Hawks combined.
However, this was no match for Shorecrest’s Cassie Chestnut and Naima Preudhomme, who scored 22 and 14 points respectively.
The Hawks got off to a slow start vs. Shorecrest, allowing Shorecrest to take a commanding 9-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game largely off turnovers and free throws, holding Terrace scoreless for over three minutes.
This largely set the tone for the rest of the game, characterized by sloppy play and disorganized play from the hawks leading to turnovers and a strong Shorecrest advantage. The Hawks finally broke through glass with a Dyson layup, narrowing the score to 9-2 and triggering a Terrace timeout to regroup.
Shorecrest quickly responded, but freshman Jaliyah Dyson was fouled and sent to the line, making both to get the Hawks’ deficit back to just seven.
Shorecrest scored a three to extend the lead to ten, before Mountlake Terrace went on a 4-0 run, their largest of the game, to cut the lead to 6 off of free throws by Dyson and junior Jordan Wagner. Shorecrest closed out the first quarter on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 18-8 lead into the second quarter.
Things quickly got out of hand for the Hawks as Shorecrest extended their run, nearly finishing out the quarter on an 18-5 run that saw Shorecrest extend their lead from just six points to 19, only broken up by buckets from junior Samiah Coffee, sophomore Emma Schmidt and Dyson.
The run was finally ended by a huge Dyson three that got the lead down to 16 just before the end of the half. Shorecrest responded with there own three to end the half up 35-16.
The Hawks were the first to score in the second half off of a freethrow by Coffee, narrowing the lead to 18. Shorecrest quickly responded with a layup, but Wagner hit a statement three to cut the lead down to just 37-20.
Shorecrest then matched Terrace with their own 3, but the Hawks continued to claw their way back early in the third, eventually getting the lead down 16 off of a 4-0 run consisting of jumpers from Stokes and Dyson.
However, this is where any hope of a miraculous Terrace comeback came to an end. Shorecrest went on a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 28, effectively ending any hopes of a Hawks win.
This was finally ended by a Wagner two-pointer that put the score at 52-26. Shorecrest continued their domination, going on a 11-0 run that extended beyond the end of the third quarter to put the final nail in the coffin, extending the lead to 39.
All in all, Shorecrest went on a 23-2 run. For the rest of the game, the Hawks and Scots mostly traded baskets, ending with a final score of 78-39.
