Tyler, the Creator decided to drop an album out of nowhere with one week of promo. I feel like the whole world was ready for this! This is his 8th studio album and his second of this decade as he swings for the fences with his new album “Chromakopia.”
St. Chroma ft. Daniel Ceaser, Rating 8/10
The song starts off with an intro from Bonita Smith saying, “Don’t dim your light for nobody.” Which is a very smart way to start an album as it presents a sort of thesis statement that this album is going to be about self empowerment. The first verse starts off with “calm down, sit still, that’s one mill for each wheel,” Tyler starts his first verse off highlighting he has a beautiful car. He goes onto talking about his money more, then goes into repeating lines of “I’m gonna make it out”, as this is a reference to Tyler saying on record multiple times he has never suffered anxiety. Daniel Ceaser then comes in with a beauiful connecting bridge on the chours to tie the song fully together. A lie switch flicks and the song is now gritty in the second verse. Tyler starts to ramp up the intensity and is rapping in a slow but harsh punch now.
Rah Tah Tah, Rating 9.5/10
In this song, Tyler shows why he is called a rapper and not a soul artist, or R&B artist, he flows so deeply on this simple beat that has depth as the song goes on. He genuinely doesn’t stutter for a second showing why he is only behind Kendrick Lamar from the rappers in California as he states in the song. Easily one of the best rapping performances of the year.
Noid, Rating 7/10
The transition will make anybody on this planet float. The guitar is what ties this whole introduction together. Tyler’s voice inflections tied in with the Zambian music he samples to add into the beat really tells the story of the stress Tyler has gone through as he rises in the music industry. Tyler states multiple times he has lost a lot of trust and has no privacy now that he has grown even more in popularity. The final verse is a poetic way to tie the whole song together infusing like 3 different generes together to make an astounding melody.
Darling, I ft. Teezo Touchdown Rating 6.5/10
The song starts off with a repetitive ballet of “Darling, I keep falling in love” adding a solid introduction. Tyler goes into a solid rapping performance about his love life again, addressing how he can’t stay loyal to one girl or man. The big tie together of the whole song is the ad libs by Teezo Touchdown, as his beautiful voice makes the song have immense depth. It’s a solid song with a couple parts that need work as he goes into a little 20 second talking session in the middle of the song that makes it quite cluttered.
Hey Jane, Rating 8.5/10
The song is a deep song that connects you to Tylers stress of messing up of having a baby and that he may have made the reckless mess up of having that child. The song gives a deep point that you don’t ever see, as Tyler addresses that the woman has to go through all the pain and stress of pregnancy and even though he is stressed he supports whatever decision his lover makes. The song ties together an anxious episode of what pregnancy scares could result in and what setup you may be giving that kid if you decide not to abort the child. Tyler connects to his listener as one of the most used lines is he is still scared of challenges in life even as a full grown adult.
I Killed You, Rating 7/10
This song tackles the mental stress of Tyler wondering if he has killed his self worth and his hair that he values so deeply. He calls the transtion back to his natural hair a killing but essiential. The song covers how deeply hair has connected in referendums back to his personantliy and personal growth as a person and artist.
Judge Judy, Rating 2/10
The song is an oversexual ballet of learning things no one I mean no one would ever want to know about Tyler. Tyler starts the song off with a weak Frank Ocean-wannabe type voice that just doesn’t formulate well whatsoever on the production. The number one thing that was not needed at all is Tyler referencing his track Dogtooth by saying the line “You could ride my face I don’t want nothing in return.” He just receclyed his old lyrics and it didn’t come together well on this song at all. The song goes into constant moaning that just doesn’t fit the track and frankly unerves the listener. The track is too much of a wannabe Frank Ocean song, it’s horrible.
Sticky ft. GloRilla, Sexxy Red & Lil Wayne, Rating 3/10
The one minute intro is way too long, nobody on this entire Earth wants to hear “It’s getting sticky,” over and over with a whistle in the background. GloRilla pops in and just brags about how she is having “sneaky links”. The beat progression is so repetitive it almost makes it unlistenable. Tyler out of all of the features you could have added you chose Sexy Redd this is what he chose for someone to rap about, “I don’t fight for my respect, b*tch, I fight for d*ck.” The lyriscim is abysmal. Lil Wayne single handedly drops the verse of the song in ten seconds with, “Caught me red-handed, palms itchin’ like rosacea Standin’ like ovation on business occupation. Drippin’ condensation, gotta whisper conversations.” The flow on such a cluttery beat just shows the talent Tunchi holds in his brain. Tyler dies the song down with a weak verse of him just talking basically not flowing on the beat, just rapping about his attraction for bi woman. The chorus of “better find a mop, it’s getting sticky,” is so corny, it’s bad.
Take Your Mask Off ft. Daniel Caesar & LaToiya Williams, Rating 5.5/10
The song states how as a child growing up in this day and age a bunch of kids put on this fough mask of guns and dumb ideas. The second verse goes dives deep into how so many men are wanting to be with other woman even though they are gay but thier christain beliefs prohbit the practice. The track goes into sympathizing with the woman’s pregnancy again which is utterly confusing; he’s just bouncing back and forth. The last verse goes into Tylers stress of people critzing him, rapping from the perspective of his haters which is an overused subject in rap culture.
Tomorrow, Rating 3/10
Horrible, he can’t sing. He wants to be Frank Ocean so badly with a whisper high pitch singing voice. He can’t hit any note and the song is just a bad interlude that doesnt need to happen in any universe. The song takes a beat switch for a second and adds a glimmer of hope to the bland song and it dies and he just moans into the mic again.
Thought I Was Dead ft. ScHoolboy Q., Rating 4.5/10
ScHoolboy Q. carries so hard, his verse is so short and sweet that it punches you right in the mouth wanting more and more. This bar is just sensational, “Like I play for the Bills, goin’ OD (They thought I was dead)”, meaning that the NFL football safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest on the field and everyone though he was dead, Q delivers with a great simile in the song basically. Then Tyler raps. “White boys mockin’ this sh*t and y’all mad at me?, Pull up old tweets, pull up old t-shirts, all that, I’ll moonwalk over that b*tch (Hee-hee)”, this bar in direct reference to his beef with the rapper Ian who he says steals music from older artists. Honestly a pretty petty bar that wasn’t needed other than to draw more attention to Tylers me me me rhetoric this whole album. The self loathing narcissistic feel of this song from Tyler just goes outside of self confidence and proves how he can’t really rap he just talks and inflates his ego.
Like Him ft. Lola Young, Rating 4.5/10
He can’t sing and he tries to sing repeatedly and it just hurts my ears. The piano transition is amazing which really carries the enjoyment of the second verse on the album. The transition into the third verse just sounds like a cheap Pink Floyd rip off, he’s trying to copy Lil Yachtys black seminole track basically. The song is long but the lyrsicm is short again.
Balloon ft. Doechii, Rating 3.5/10
Starts fast paced with horrible lyrical flow. Tyler has no lyrical talent, please just put down the mic for my ears sake if you’re saying you slay like the bells during christmas. Doechii, why add the bar about farting? Just why?
I Hope You Find Your Way Home, Rating 5.5.
It’s finally over.
