Homecoming is celebrated throughout many different high schools and even some universities in the United States. There are many different traditions that differ depending on the school. Some traditions include parades, football games, homecoming courts, pep rallies, alumni involvement, competitions to see who is the most spirited, and of course the spirit week.
This year, the theme for Terrace students was “It’s a Small World.” The classes were assigned to a specific city in different countries.
The freshman got Las Vegas. The sophomores got the city of Rome in Italy. The juniors got the city of Havana in Cuba. And the seniors got Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.
The spirit week was a hit among the students with many dressing up. Monday was Neon vs. Cowboy/Western Day where students got to either be decked out in bright neon colors or wear cowboy or gingham prints.
Tuesday was Tourist Day, where students wore Hawaiian shirts and leis. Wednesday was Character Day where students got to dress up as their favorite cartoon character. Thursday was a Night in Rome where students got to dress up in formal wear. And Friday was the tried and true Class Colors Day, where students were decked out in gray, white, black, and red – the Terrace colors.
The themes for the spirit days were inspired by the class themes. Monday was inspired by the Las Vegas theme. Tuesday inspired by the juniors Havana, Cuba theme. Wednesday was inspired by the seniors’ Tokyo theme. Lastly, Thursday was inspired by the sophomores theme.
Most students enjoyed spirit week and there was a lot of participation.
Many students really enjoyed the spirit week and the chosen themes.
However, there was some dislike as a few students described the spirit week as ´mid.´ Some thought that the theme was too basic and wanted the themes to be elaborate and unique.
There was also confusion on the spirit days. For example, for the Night in Rome theme, there was confusion on what to dress up as for the actual spirit day. Was it a preppy tourist? Was it really formal long dresses? Was it dressing in togas? Was it dressing as if you were going out?
While ASB clarified that the intended theme was formal wear and being prepared for a night-out, some students and staff chose to go the traditional Night in Rome route. One example of this was honors English teacher Vince DeMiero dressing up as the Pope and referring to his classroom as having a Night in Vatican City instead of Rome.
Along with this, history teacher Kevin Greear made a point to commit to the bit of every spirit day. On Tourist day, he went around with a small map, pretending to be lost.
Other than the confusion, many students enjoyed spirit week and had a lot of fun during homecoming.
