Entering the 2023-2024 school year, the MTHS Latino Student Union stands proudly as a safe and welcoming environment for all Latino students on campus regardless of gender, race, fluency in English, or ethnic background. LSU takes pride in our meaningful, open discussion based weekly meetings, where we discuss real issues and pressing topics going on within the community. For example, topics we have covered in the past include racial profiling, segregation, colorism, infighting within the Latino Community, and education on Latin holidays such as Day of the Dead. Although we do pride ourselves in our group discussions, LSU is also all about celebrating and uplifting what it means to be Latino. On a regular day, walking into LSU you can expect to hear some music playing and see all of our members collaborating and having fun with each other around the table during a game or activity. It’s in the mix of these two styles, how LSU grew to the height it did last year.
Another important aspect of our club is our fundraising and volunteering events. Last year, using the funds gained from our seasonal fundraising events at school, we were able to send 6 of our club members to a week-long student leadership camp called La Cima, and we plan to send students this coming year as well. In terms of volunteering, in the past we’ve worked closely with the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Mountlake Terrace and Washington Kids in Transition to make our impact known to the community. While it’s crucial to educate and discuss issues happening in our communities, LSU takes a step further by actively going out and making a difference by helping out where we can. Over the course of the previous school year, we were able to get a total of around 80 volunteering hours, and we hope to only increase that number this school year! Overall, while we’re coming out of an incredibly successful year for LSU, our leadership team still feels like we’re just getting started, and we all look forward to another amazing year filled with education, celebration, and the uplifting of Latino voices at Mountlake Terrace High School in the 2023-2024 school year!
