Which 3A team is the hottest in the state right now?
Ask just about anyone and they’ll tell you it’s the Terrace Hawks.
Never mind the fact that the Hawks struggled out of the gate this season to a 3-10 start, they’ve been nearly unbeatable since winning 9 of the past 10 games in dramatic, overwhelming fashion.
Saturday’s loser-out, winner-to-state victory over Mount Vernon was no fluke for the No. 10 seeded Hawks. They jumped on the Bulldogs in the top of the 1st inning for two runs and never looked back, taking advantage of errors and miscues by No. 5 seeded Mount Vernon. In fact, the Bulldogs’ pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone using six different hurlers – including four different pitchers in the 3rd inning when the Hawks plated six runs. Most humbling was when the Hawks scored two runs on a passed ball when the Bulldogs seemed to forget that the ball was in play.
Snow was brilliant on the mound, walking just two and giving up just three hits and the single run. The game was called in the 5th inning due to the 10-run mercy rule when the Hawks held on to their 10-run lead.
Here’s a video of the final out and the celebrations that followed.
The last time the Hawks earned a state berth was in 2018 when they finished 2nd in the state in the 2A division under then-head coach Andrew Watters. New skipper Ryan Sells along with assistants Jaykob Sells, Connor Flynn and Dominic DeMiero are also making their first trip to state with the Hawks as coaches. Each of the four are former Terrace players.
