3:50 p.m. Post-Game Stats
Sometimes the stats don’t mean much. Today is not one of those times. There’s a lot to learn from the box score. Here are the biggest take-aways:
- SCORING: Sophomore forward Zaveon Jones again led the Hawks today – and was tied for the top scorer in the game – with 16. He did that in just 19 minutes on the floor. Jeffrey Anyimah had 11 and those were the only two Hawks in double figures. There were four Wildcats in double figures – Kamalu-Vargas 16, Roe 12, Lafferty 10, and Sanders 11.
- REBOUNDING: The Hawks were out-rebounded by the ‘Cats 34-20.
- TURNOVERS: ‘Cats 8, Hawks 14.
- POINTS OFF TURNOVERS: ‘Cats 20, Hawks 9.
- POINTS IN THE PAINT: ‘Cats 28, Hawks 12.
- POSITIVES: The Hawks outscored the Wildcats 18-14 in the 4th quarter despite Mt. Spokane keeping most of their top players on the floor.
See you tomorrow @ 10:30 as the Hawks can still take home some hardware with a victory over the Gig Harbor Tide!
3:44 p.m. End of the Game
Hawks 45, Mt. Spokane 70.
This was a complete game by a solid Wildcat team. The Hawks will put this behind them and face Gig Harbor tomorrow morning @ 10:30 a.m.
Some final state forthcoming…
3:28 p.m. End of the 3rd Quarter
Hawks trail 56-27 to a very solid Mt. Spokane team.
Hawks just out of sorts today, but this Wildcat team is very good.
3:00 p.m. End of the 1st Half
Hawks 17, Mt. Spokane 34.
Well, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Remember, this is the #7 Mt. Spokane team that took down #2 Auburn last Friday by 11 points. Oh, and that Auburn team just beat #1 Garfield in the quarterfinals. So, yeah, Mt. Spokane is for real.
Observations:
- Mt. Spokane has clearly scouted the Hawks well. Watch how they know what the preferred entry pass is for nearly every offensive set the Hawks run. That’s impressive.
- The Hawks went on a nice 7-0 run and cut the lead to 5 early in the 2nd quarter, but got away from team ball a bit when the shots weren’t dropping.
- Turnover points? Wildcats lead 12-4 and the Hawks have 7 turnovers.
- Points in the paint? Wildcats lead 22-12 in that category.
- Zaveon Jones has been pretty quiet mostly because of foul trouble
- Vito Mkrtychyan leads the Hawks w/7 at the half.
- Jeffrey Anyimah has just 2 points at the half.
- The Hawks have trailed by 10 or more points in all but one post-season game and have won them all thus far.
2:44 p.m. End of 1st Quarter
Well, we’ve seen this story before. The Hawks have fallen behind before early in the game only to find their way back for a “W.” But this Mt. Spokane team is solid, they’ve definitely scouted the Hawks well, and they’re deep.

Terrace v. Mt. Spokane coming up in about 20 minutes.
2:03 p.m. Pre-Game Update
Rainier Beach and Gig Harbor are finishing up the game just before our. Important to note that if the Hawks win, they play the winner of this game tomorrow @ 5:30 p.m. If they lose to Mt. Spokane, they play the loser of this game @ 10:30 a.m.
37.1 seconds to go, Beach is up 64-58.
1:33 p.m. Pre-Game Observations
The games are a bit behind because #2 Auburn took #1 Garfield into overtime and knocked off the defending state champs, 64-60.
#6 Gig Harbor is facing #4 Rainier Beach right now in the 3rd quarter.
What are the Hawks facing today? Well, Mt. Spokane is easily the tallest team the Hawks have faced all year. The Wildcats feature eight players who stand 6’3″ or taller out of the 10 players on the tournament roster. Senior center David Roe stands 6’8″. Still, the Hawks have faced at least one player who is taller than their tallest player in nearly every game this year and that hasn’t seemed to faze Terrace too much. We’ll see today.
More updates to come, but be sure to follow us on Twitter @MTHSports throughout the game, too.
