A screening of the 2014 movie “Black Girl in Suburbia” will take place in the MTHS theater on Friday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m. Melissa Lowery, the film’s director, is to hold a Q&A session following the event.

“Black Girl in Suburbia” is a feature documentary that is centered around the lives of black girls who were raised in predominantly white communities. The movie is crafted from both professional and personal interviews of black girls and looks into the conflict they faced in relation to their communities.

According to the film’s official website, the purpose of “Black Girl in Suburbia” is to give exposure to these girls and their stories about “struggle and triumph.” In addition, the creators hope the movie allows people to more openly discuss “race, identity, and perspectives among all people.”

Lowery became inspired to create “Black Girl in Suburbia” after hearing her two daughters’ tell her about their experiences, which resonated with her own experience of living in a white suburb in Oregon.

The film is appropriate for audiences over the age of 15. Spanish interpretation will be offered at the event. Child care will be provided for child over the age of 3 and will be held in room 220.

The screening is co-sponsored by the Edmonds School District and City of Edmonds Diversity Commission.
