Edmonds School District Board president Susan Phillips announced last week that she will not seek re-election next year.
Phillips’s term expires in December 2017, after which a new School Board president will be decided upon. Between the end of her term and the announcement of a new president, according to Phillips, Board member and Vice President Ann McMurray will most likely take over.
As president, Phillips help to run the bi-monthly meeting and meet with Superintendent Kris McDuffy to provide input on the meeting agendas. Also, Phillips meets with students and staff around the district to gauge how different schools are performing.
Phillips has been on the board since 2007, taking a short leave a few years after for family issues and has maintained multiple leadership roles since then. She has been the president three or four times, she said, and a legislative representative as well.
Phillips said she’s grateful for the opportunities she’s had as president and the ability to learn from being a Board member. She’s had great experiences with teachers and other ESD staff, she said.
“I’ve enjoyed my experiences…and it’s been great to have the opportunity to learn about ESD overall,” she said.
Along with taking on the role of president, Phillips also serves as the Director of District four. The next person elected to the board, which will have to be filed to Snohomish County by May 19 to make the ballot, will have to live within the boundaries of District four as set by ESD. This, Phillips said, is to ensure that not everyone on the Board lives in the same place and the members have full representation of the district.
