School choirs of the southeast quadrant of Edmonds School District gathered to produce a lively and energetic performance. On Tuesday, March 7, Brier Elementary, Cedar Way Elementary, Hazelwood Elementary, Mountlake Terrace Elementary, Terrace Park Elementary and MTHS gathered to perform in the 29th annual SE Choir Quad Concert.
MTHS started off the concert with a song of hope with a performance of “Rise” by Katy Perry, which was also performed by the choir in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day assembly earlier this year.
The combined elementary schools continued this hopeful mood by performing the song “When I Grow Up” from Matilda the Musical. The elementary school students sang about what they wished to do when they were all grown up, with ideas ranging from becoming strong enough to carry anything to becoming smart enough to answer anything that needs to be answered.
The elementary schools continued the light-hearted mood with the song “Rainbow Connection” as sung by Kermit the Frog in the Muppet Movie. The song had the elementary schoolers sing about the many impressions of rainbows and the reasons why they are so appreciated.
The boys from the choirs then formed one large group and sang “I’m a Believer” by Smash Mouth which gained popularity through the Shrek movie. The performers were full of energy during the performance and many danced while they sang.
All of the girls from every choir performed “You’ve got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story, a much slower song, though the performers still showed a lot of energy during their performance.
Then the Women’s Ensemble of the MTHS choir performed two songs: “He’s Gone Away” and “O Vos Omnes.” This brought a more soothing tone to the concert in contrast with many of the previous songs.
The concert ended with an upbeat mood, with all of the choirs performing “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from the musical Hairspray.
Junior and choir member Candace Disney was glad the MTHS choir was able to perform with the students from the elementary schools and thought they added energy to the songs they performed.
“‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ was my favorite song because all of the kids made it so fun and they were all dancing and they just looked really happy,” Disney said.
Senior and choir member Tanner Rook, who also starred in the musical Zombie Prom and won the Audience Choice award in Terrace Idol 2017, believed that the combined choirs put on a great performance
“I think we did really well, I think the [elementary school] kids did really well, I think the high schoolers did really well and all around I thought it was a great show,” Rook said.
The performance was hosted by choir teacher T.J. Sullivan who also directed the MTHS choir during the concert. At the end of the show, Sullivan told the elementary school students to remember the MTHS choir and keep them in mind when they reached high school, as Brier Terrace Middle School, the school that most of the elementary schoolers will be attending, does not have a choir program.
