When students return to MTHS in September, they will notice something different covering their heads. Construction for a new roof is scheduled to begin the last day of school, June 25.

The entire roof will be replaced except the roof of the Terraceum, which was replaced just a few years ago. The $1.3 million replacement project is expected to last the entire summer according to Principal Schwab.

The current roof did not meet the expectations Schwab had for it.

“[The current roof] was guaranteed for 20 years. It did not last the full 20 years,” Schwab said.

Replacing the current roof is necessary because of the roof’s cracks and leaks.

“There are several places in the building where the roof leaks significantly,” Schwab said. “The water damage can potentially damage the structures beneath the roof so it is necessary to replace it at this time to prevent further structural damage to the building.”

Due to roof construction, the building will be closed for most of the summer and there will be limited access to the inside of MTHS until the later part of the summer.

“We expect to have limited access to the building starting on Aug. 13,” Schwab said.

The limited access could potentially limit the preparedness of teachers for the beginning for the year.

“It will be a minor hassle, but I’m not really worried about its impact on my preparation for the upcoming school year,” science teacher Adam Welman said.
