New ASB officers elected

Over the past few weeks you may have been bombarded with candidates asking you to sign their ASB petition. Well, the elections for next year’s Big Six have come to a quiet finish and with seven people running for only six positions, no formal election was even held.

“I think the people who ran for the positions are well qualified and they are all passionate about helping our school be a better place,” ASB President-elect AnhViet Nguyen said. “Hopefully more people turn out for class elections because we need talented leaders in ASB.”

The one contested race for ASB historian was held during an informal election during lunch in the HUB. Juniors Erika McAuliffe and Trung Banh gave speeches and were the only two names on the ballot. After the votes were tallied, Banh was declared the winner. “My plans are to have everyone more involved in school and for [students] to actually know what ASB is about,” Banh said.

One big problem with not having a formal election during advisory was that students weren’t able to hear what the candidates thought and many students aren’t sure what the Big Six even is.

“If it was during advisory there definitely would’ve been more votes. Lots of people leave during lunch,” sophomore Andy Shehata said.

With the election behind them, the new ASB members plan to focus on how to address problems at MTHS such as lack of student involvement in the school or lack of unity among the student body.

“We [MTHS] have horrible spirit and I feel that we could definitely do a lot better,” ASB Treasurer-elect Sydney White said.

“We’re going to try to make the assemblies more fun, have more student involvement,” ASB Public Relations Coordinator-elect Lilianne Nguyen said. “I’m going to try my best to do whatever is needed and let everyone know what’s going on [at school].”

The new Big Six are all experienced ASB members but only AnhViet has served on the Big Six before. He was this year’s PR coordinator.

“What I’ve seen of them in the past, they [the new ASB members] all have the potential to be good leaders,” current ASB Secretary Bushra Raza said. “Whether they are or are not, only time will tell.”

The new members will now start planning for the spring activities assembly in April, class ASB elections in early May and they will start to look at next year’s budget.

“I am excited and pumped up about next year and about all of the things that we’re going to be doing,” White said.
