Fernandez returns, Hawks smack Shorewood

In his 2012-2013 debut for the Hawks, Blake Fernandez (21) looked to be in mid-season form as he contributed 8 points and numerous assists for the Hawks Friday night in the Terraceum. Fernandez is coming off an injury to his non-shooting hand.

Merry Christmas Coach Sood.

Earlier in the year, Sood said, “If anybody wants to know what to get me for Christmas, give me a healthy Blake Fernandez.”

Well, he got his wish tonight as the Hawks crushed the Shorewood Thunderbirds 48-35 and improved to 5-1 on the season, 2-0 in WesCo South 3A.

Fernandez ended the night with eight points, and started the game and second half on the bench. He passed the ball and controlled the game as if in midseason form, dishing out beautiful passes, driving to the hoop, and handling the ball with his typical mastery.

Junior post Greg Bowman led all scorers with 19. Junior post Loren LaCasse added seven of his own and senior guards Marquis Armstead and Michael Lotz each tallied five.

At the end of the first half, the Hawks lead 27-20 before taking over the second half of the game, outscoring Shorewood 21-13.

The Hawks kept an impressive defensive streak alive, too – for at least the past two seasons, the Hawks have held every opponent in the regular season to single-digit scoring in at least one quarter. Tonight the T-Birds were held to nine points in the first quarter, and just three in the third.

Josh Hawkinson scored 16 points for the Thunderbirds, including 11 in the first half.

Mountlake Terrace faces off against the Shorecrest Scots next Tuesday, Dec. 18 in the Terraceum.
